I think this is a copy of our first menu. The toaster logo was an homage to Ships, a classic L.A. coffee shop from the 50’s that had a toaster on every table. When Ship’s opened in 1956 a “coffee shop” was a full-service restaurant. A “coffee house” was a place for coffee and espresso drinks. I don’t know when that changed, but younger people that came to the Hollywood Hills Coffee Shop didn’t realize at first that we were a restaurant. Ship’s also served complimentary salsa with every plate of eggs and freshly squeezed orange juice (stand-out features that we also offered).
