Property developer Tom Gilmore was a true pioneer when he graced the cover of the Los Angeles Times Magazine in 1999.  Tom lived in the Hollywood Hills and worked downtown. When he opened his own property development company it was a joke at the time that it wasn’t safe to let Tom go out to lunch, because every time he did, it seemed that he had bought a new building.  Tom came to the restaurant just about every Saturday for breakfast.  He wanted me to open a restaurant in “the old Bank District” but I have to admit that although I always thought that “Hollywood” was an underdeveloped brand with enormous potential, I just couldn’t wrap my head around “downtown.”  Tom and the other downtown visionaries have obviously proved that “downtown L.A.” is a brand worth developing.
